Health & PE Course Descriptions




* A graduation, Core 40, and Academic Honors Course

3506                       Health and Wellness *

In this course students learn about total health in the social, physical, and mental realm.  Emphasis is placed on body systems and how substance abuse has detrimental effects on these systems and the student’s overall health. 

Grade:  9-10                                            Prerequisite:  None                            One semester:  1 credit


3542/3544            Physical Education 1 and 2 (L) *

These courses continue with an emphasis on health-related fitness and developing the skills and habits necessary for a lifetime of activity.  This program includes skill development and the application of rules and strategies of complex difficulty in at least three of the following movement forms: (1) health-related fitness activities (cardio respiratory endurance, muscular strength and endurance, flexibility, and body composition) (2) aerobic exercise (3) team sports (4) individual and dual sports (5) gymnastics (6) outdoor pursuits (7) self-defense (8) aquatics (9) dance and (10) recreational games.

Grade:  9-10                                        Prerequisite:  None                            One semester:  1 credit each


3560                       Elective PE/ Strength and Conditioning (L) 

This course will be designed to condition and strengthen students.  There will be no activities involving games.  This class will be coordinated with each sport so that each student athlete will receive maximum benefit from this class.  Students will participate in weight training, running/agility training, plyometrics, stretching, skeletal and muscular testing. 

Grade:  11-12                                      Prerequisite:  PE 1&2                       Full Year:  2 credits
